The Ford Mustang featured in Goldfinger (1964) was a very early pre-production “1964½” Mustang Convertible, finished in Wimbledon White with a red interior. It was one of the first Mustangs ever seen by the public and is often credited as the model's first major appearance in a motion picture. The car was driven by Tilly Masterson, played by Tania Mallet, and showcased Ford's brand-new pony car just months after its introduction. In the film, Tilly uses the Mustang while pursuing Auric Goldfinger through the Swiss Alps. During the famous mountain-road chase, James Bond follows in his gadget-equipped Aston Martin DB5. When Bond deploys the DB5's wheel-mounted tire cutter, it tears into the side of the Mustang, causing Tilly to lose control and crash off the road. The damaged Mustang then becomes part of the sequence that brings Bond and Tilly together as they continue their attempt to uncover Goldfinger's criminal activities. The scene helped cement both the Mustang and the Aston Martin DB5 as memorable automotive stars of the Bond franchise.
