The 1989 Camel Trophy – Amazon, Brazil celebrated the event’s tenth anniversary by returning to its roots in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, producing what is widely regarded as the toughest Camel Trophy ever staged. Deliberately run during the height of the rainy season, the expedition followed a gruelling route from Alta Floresta along the infamous BR‑163 and Transamazonica highways toward Santarém, before finishing in Manaus, with sections so waterlogged and muddy that progress at times measured only hundreds of metres per day. Teams from fourteen countries, driving Land Rover Defenders, battled bottomless “potter’s clay” mud, stranded heavy trucks, constant recovery work, and frequent mechanical damage, relying heavily on winching, digging, and teamwork to move forward at all.
